Pharmacy & Regulatory Note
Schedule 4 (Prescription Only): Apoquel (Oclacitinib) is a prescription medication registered by the APVMA for use in dogs in Australia.
It is specifically indicated for the control of itchiness (pruritus) associated with allergic dermatitis and the control of atopic dermatitis in dogs. This medication must only be used under the direct supervision and prescription of a registered veterinarian.
For detailed technical data, you can view the official Product Information (PI) via the APVMA PubCRIS database.
What is Apoquel, and what is it used for?
Apoquel is a fast-acting medication prescribed by veterinarians to provide relief for dogs suffering from allergic skin conditions and chronic itchiness.
It is prescribed to control itchiness (pruritus) associated with allergic dermatitis. Your veterinarian will typically use this medication while also investigating and treating underlying causes, such as:
- Flea Allergic Dermatitis
- Food Hypersensitivity
- Contact Dermatitis
It is also used to manage complicating factors like bacterial or fungal infections (such as ear infections or pyoderma) that often accompany skin allergies.
How does Apoquel work?
Apoquel is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It works by specifically targeting and blocking the enzymes that act as "messengers" for itch and inflammation. By "muting" these internal signals, the medication provides rapid relief from the sensation of itching, often within 4 to 24 hours of the first dose.
What formats does Apoquel come in?
- Apoquel Tablets for dogs: Available in 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg, and 16 mg strengths to suit various dog weights.
- Apoquel Chewable Tablets: A flavoured version designed for easier administration.
Your veterinarian will determine the correct dose based on your dog's weight and the severity of their condition. Dosing typically starts twice daily for up to 14 days, then moves to once daily for maintenance.
Possible Apoquel side effects
Safety Parity Notice: Most dogs tolerate Apoquel well, but it is important to monitor your pet for the following reactions:
- Digestive Issues: Mild vomiting or diarrhoea may occur in some dogs.
- Appetite: A temporary decrease in appetite or energy levels.
- Skin Changes: The development of new or increased skin lumps (histiocytomas) or urinary tract infections has been occasionally reported.
- Immune System: Because it affects cell signalling, long-term use may occasionally make some dogs more susceptible to infections or parasitic skin infestations (demodicosis).
Apoquel Contraindications
This medication should not be used in the following circumstances:
- Known hypersensitivity: Animals that have a known hypersensitivity to oclacitinib.
- Age: Not for use in dogs under 12 months of age or less than 3 kg bodyweight.
- Breeding: Not for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.
- Immune suppression: Should not be used in dogs with serious pre-existing immune suppression like hyperadrenocorticism.
Apoquel Precautions
The following conditions require careful consideration and monitoring by your vet:
- Pre-existing Conditions: Caution is required in dogs with a history of malignancy (cancer).
- Vaccinations: If your dog is due for a vaccination, consult your vet. It is generally recommended to avoid "modified live" vaccines while your dog is on Apoquel.
- Long-term Monitoring: For dogs on long-term treatment, veterinarians typically recommend periodic blood tests to monitor overall health.
How to store Apoquel
- Temperature: Store at room temperature (below 25°C) in a dry area away from direct sunlight.
- Security: Keep the medication in its original child-resistant container and store it strictly out of reach of children and other animals.
Apoquel FAQs
How quickly will my dog stop itching?
Apoquel is very fast-acting. Most owners notice a significant reduction in scratching within 4 to 24 hours of the first dose.
Can Apoquel be used alongside other medications?
Apoquel is generally safe to use with common medications like flea and tick preventatives, antibiotics, and vaccines. However, you should always inform your vet of all other supplements or drugs your dog is taking.
How long can my dog stay on Apoquel?
Apoquel can be used for short-term "flare-ups" or as a long-term maintenance medication for chronic allergies. Your veterinarian will determine the best duration based on your dog's response and regular health checks.
