Pharmacy & Regulatory Note
Schedule 4 (Prescription Only): Grapiprant is a prescription medication registered by the APVMA for use in dogs in Australia.

For detailed technical data, you can view the official Product Information (PI) via the APVMA PubCRIS database.
What is Grapiprant, and what is it used for?
Grapiprant is a targeted medication used to manage the pain and inflammation associated with canine osteoarthritis. Because it is designed to be highly specific, veterinarians often prescribe it for dogs with early-stage arthritis or for senior dogs who may require long-term pain management but are sensitive to traditional anti-inflammatories.
How does Grapiprant work?
Grapiprant belongs to a new class of anti-inflammatories called piprants. Unlike traditional NSAIDs that block the production of prostaglandins entirely, Grapiprant acts as an antagonist at a specific receptor (the EP4 receptor). This receptor is the primary one responsible for triggering osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. By only blocking this specific "lock," the medication provides pain relief while leaving other beneficial prostaglandins in the body untouched.
What formats does Grapiprant come in?
Flavoured Tablets: Available in 20 mg, 60 mg, and 100 mg strengths. The tablets are scored, allowing them to be easily divided to match your dog's specific weight.
Dosing Note: Grapiprant is administered once daily. It is ideally given on an empty stomach (at least one hour before feeding) for maximum absorption, though it can be given with a small amount of food if your dog has a sensitive stomach.
Possible Grapiprant side effects

- Energy Levels: Mild lethargy or tiredness.

Grapiprant Precautions

- Age/Weight: Safety has not been established in dogs under 9 months of age or weighing less than 3.6 kg.
- Breeding: Safety has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding, or those that are pregnant or lactating.
- Other Medications: Use caution when using Grapiprant alongside other NSAIDs or corticosteroids. While it works differently, combining these classes still increases the risk of gastrointestinal issues.

How to store Grapiprant
Temperature: Store at room temperature (below 25°C.
Security: Keep the bottle tightly closed and store it out of reach of children and other animals. Because the tablets are flavoured, pets may try to consume the entire bottle if left unattended.
Grapiprant FAQs
Why is Grapiprant considered different from other "NSAIDs"?
Traditional NSAIDs block the production of all prostaglandins (both the "bad" ones that cause pain and the "good" ones that protect the stomach). Grapiprant only blocks the specific receptor that causes arthritis pain, which is intended to reduce the impact on the rest of the body.
How long does it take to work?
Owners usually see an improvement in their dog's comfort and willingness to move within 1 to 2 hours of the first dose.
Does my dog need to take it every day?
For osteoarthritis, consistency is key. Grapiprant is designed for daily use to maintain a steady level of comfort. Stopping and starting can allow inflammation to return.
Can I give it with my dogʼs other joint supplements?
Yes, Grapiprant is often used in combination with joint supplements like Glucosamine, Omega-3 fatty acids, or 4cyte to provide a multi-layered approach to joint health.
What should I do if my dog vomits after taking it?
If vomiting occurs, try giving the next dose with a small amount of food. If the vomiting is persistent or accompanied by a loss of appetite, contact your veterinarian.
