Cavoodles, a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle, are one of Australia’s most popular companion breeds. Their gentle nature, intelligence, and charming looks make them an ideal fit for many families. When sourced from responsible breeders, Cavoodles are typically healthy dogs, but their unique genetic mix means they can still inherit a few health risks from either side.
Understanding these breed-specific vulnerabilities is one of the best things you can do to support your dog’s long-term well-being. Knowing what Cavoodles are prone to helps you spot problems early, seek timely veterinary care, and make better choices around diet, grooming, and exercise.
That’s exactly what this guide is here for. Backed by veterinary insight, it breaks down the most common health issues in Cavoodles and shows how proactive, everyday care can help them live a long, happy life.
Are Cavoodles a Healthy Breed?
Cavoodles are generally regarded as a healthy crossbreed, often living between 12 and 15 years. Many enjoy active, playful lives well into their senior years. Thanks to hybrid vigour, Cavoodles can sometimes have a broader genetic base than pure breeds, which may reduce the risk of certain inherited conditions.
However, because both Poodles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have some shared health predispositions, Cavoodles aren’t completely free from risk. Issues like heart disease, joint instability, and eye problems can still show up, especially without careful breeding practices.
From a veterinary perspective, being “healthy” goes beyond the absence of disease. It means strong joints, clear eyes, healthy skin and ears, and good dental status that hold up over time. Routine vet checks, balanced nutrition, and early intervention are crucial for Cavoodles — catching issues early often leads to simpler, more effective management.

Common Cavoodle Health Issues
Cavoodles are typically robust, but certain health conditions are more common in this breed mix. Being aware of these risks helps you take action sooner, often preventing small problems from becoming bigger health concerns.
Ear Infections
Cavoodles have soft, floppy ears that hold in warmth and moisture. This creates ideal conditions for bacterial and yeast infections, especially after swimming or bathing.
You may notice:
- Head shaking
- Scratching at the ears
- A sour smell
- Redness or discharge
Some dogs become sensitive to touch or tilt their head. Prompt treatment with medicated drops is often effective. Ongoing prevention includes weekly ear cleaning with a vet-recommended solution and thoroughly drying the ears after getting wet.

Allergies
Cavoodles are prone to both food and environmental allergies. These often appear as red, itchy skin or recurring infections, particularly around the ears and paws.
Common triggers include:
- Chicken, beef, or dairy
- Fleas
- Pollen or dust mites
Managing allergies typically involves a combination of strategies: tailored diets, regular flea control, medicated shampoos, and prescription treatments as needed. Long-term comfort depends on identifying the specific cause early and working with your vet to avoid flare-ups.

Hip Dysplasia
Though more often seen in large breeds, hip dysplasia can occur in Cavoodles, particularly those from Miniature Poodle lines. The condition affects how the hip joint develops and leads to arthritis over time.
Signs include:
- Difficulty rising or jumping
- Hind limb stiffness
- A reluctance to exercise
Management focuses on weight control, gentle exercise, and joint supplements. More advanced cases may require surgery to restore comfort and mobility. Early diagnosis helps reduce long-term joint damage.
Patellar Luxation
Patellar luxation is a kneecap disorder common in small dogs, including Cavoodles. The kneecap slips out of place, sometimes only briefly, but it can cause long-term joint strain if untreated.
Symptoms to watch for:
- A skipping or hopping gait
- Sudden limping
- Holding up a back leg
Mild cases may not need treatment beyond monitoring and lifestyle adjustments. In more severe or painful cases, surgical correction is often recommended to stabilise the joint and prevent arthritis.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
PRA is an inherited condition that gradually damages the retina and leads to vision loss. It is seen in Poodles and can be passed to Cavoodle pups without proper genetic screening.
Early signs include:
- Night blindness
- Bumping into furniture
- Hesitation in dim lighting
There’s no cure, but affected dogs usually adapt well with support. Responsible breeders screen for PRA to help reduce the risk in future litters. If your Cavoodle shows changes in eyesight, a vet ophthalmologist can confirm the diagnosis.
Dental Disease
Cavoodles are at high risk for dental problems due to their small jaws and tightly packed teeth. Without daily care, plaque buildup can quickly progress to gum disease.
Watch for:
- Bad breath
- Red or bleeding gums
- Visible tartar
- Dropping food or chewing on one side
Preventive care includes daily brushing with dog-safe toothpaste, dog dental chews, and regular professional cleanings. Addressing oral health early helps avoid pain, infection, and tooth loss down the track.

Preventative Care Tips for Cavoodles
Routine Health Checks
Book wellness exams at least once a year, and more often as your Cavoodle gets older. These visits help catch common issues early, including heart murmurs, dental disease, skin problems, and joint changes before they progress.
Vaccination and Parasite Protection
Keep your Cavoodle up to date on core and lifestyle vaccinations. Parasite control is essential year-round, especially for dogs prone to allergies, since flea bites can trigger major flare-ups. Choose vet-recommended preventatives for fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal worms.

KONG AirDog Squeaker Balls Small

KONG SqueakAir Ball
The KONG story begins back in the 1970s at the hands of Joe Markham, who recognised that his ex-police dog Fritz was attempting to entertain himself by chewing rocks. Knowing the hazards this presented, Joe one day tossed Fritz a piece of Volkswagen Bus rubber suspension part that Joe was working on - and Fritz loved it! Joe then worked to make a dog toy with the same durability and feel, until he created the KONG toy that people (and their dogs) all around the world love. KONG dog toys encourage play, satisfying instinctual needs and strengthening the bond between dog and pet parent. Built for durability, KONG dog toys also offer mental and physical stimulation, all whilst meeting a dog's need to play.
The KONG SqueakAir Ball combines two classic dog toys - the tennis ball and the squeaker - to create the perfect fetch toy. The non-abrasive, high-quality material will not wear down your dogs teeth, and is ideal for an intense game of fetch!
- Tough and bouncy

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the life expectancy of a Cavoodle?
Most Cavoodles live between 12 and 15 years. With the right nutrition and proactive vet care, many remain playful well into their senior years.
How can I tell if my Cavoodle comes from healthy breeding lines?
Choose breeders who perform DNA tests for PRA and screen for patellar and hip issues. Responsible breeders will happily share health clearances for both parent dogs.
What are the early warning signs of health issues in Cavoodles?
Keep an eye out for changes like frequent ear scratching, skin redness, stiffness after rest, bad breath, or sudden changes in appetite or activity. Early intervention often means simpler treatment.
Should Cavoodles take joint supplements from puppyhood?
For many Cavoodles, especially those with a family history of joint concerns, your vet may suggest starting joint support early to help protect growing cartilage.
How often should I take my Cavoodle to the vet for checkups?
At least once a year for adults, and every six months is often recommended for seniors or dogs with known health concerns.
Conclusion
Cavoodles are affectionate, social, and well-suited to family life—but like many small breeds, they come with some health considerations.
Conditions such as ear infections, allergies, joint issues, and dental disease are common, but most can be managed with early care and the right daily routines.
What matters most is consistency. Regular vet checkups, a balanced diet, dental hygiene, and close observation at home all play a role in protecting their long-term health.
With the right support, Cavoodles can enjoy a long, active life. Stay proactive, stay informed, and help your dog thrive at every stage.
