Product Information

Royal Canin Mini Adult is a complete dry dog food formulated for small breed adult dogs from 1 to 10 kg, aged 10 months and over. The recipe is calibrated for the higher metabolic rate of small breeds and the smaller jaw structure of toy and miniature dogs, with kibble shape, size, and texture all adapted to encourage chewing.

Health Benefits

  • Energy adapted for small breeds: small dogs have a faster metabolism per kg of body weight than larger dogs, and this formula matches their elevated energy needs
  • Kibble shape and size for small jaws: designed to be picked up and chewed by toy and miniature breeds, encouraging proper mastication rather than swallowing whole
  • Skin and coat support: omega-6 fatty acids, biotin, and amino acids help maintain a healthy skin barrier and a glossy coat
  • Digestive support: highly digestible proteins (L.I.P.) and prebiotic fibres support gut health, helping reduce stool volume and odour
  • Balanced mineral content: controlled levels of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium support long-term urinary and skeletal health in small breeds
  • Suited to small breed life expectancy: small dogs live longer on average and benefit from ongoing antioxidant support included in this formula

Royal Canin Mini Adult is a complete dry dog food for small breed adults from 1 to 10 kg, formulated to match the higher metabolism, smaller jaw, and longer life expectancy of toy and miniature breeds.

What It's Used For

  • Adult small breed daily nutrition: complete and balanced everyday food for healthy adult dogs from 1 to 10 kg, suitable for breeds like Maltese, Chihuahuas, Jack Russells, Shih Tzus, and Pomeranians
  • Fussy eaters: the smaller, palatable kibble is designed for the higher palate sensitivity common in toy and miniature breeds
  • Coat and skin condition: ongoing daily nutrition with omega-6 and biotin to maintain healthy skin and coat. For small breeds prone to itchy or sensitive skin, read our guide to dog skin conditions
  • Healthy stool quality: highly digestible proteins help produce firmer, smaller stools, useful for dogs prone to soft stools or sensitive stomachs
  • Long-term health maintenance: antioxidant support targeting cell health in the longer-living small breeds

Why Dr Jack Ayerbe Recommends It

“Small breed dogs have a faster metabolism and a longer life expectancy than larger dogs, and their diet needs to reflect both. Royal Canin Mini Adult is calibrated for that profile: energy density, kibble size, and nutrient balance all match what a toy or miniature dog actually needs. The kibble shape matters more than people realise — a small dog needs to chew the kibble for dental and digestive benefit, not swallow it whole. If your small breed is losing interest in food or gaining weight despite the same routine, review portion sizes and book a vet check to rule out underlying causes.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Small breed puppies can switch to Royal Canin Mini Adult between 10 and 12 months of age, once growth has slowed. Mini Adult is formulated specifically for dogs 10 months and older. If your puppy is still growing or sits below ideal adult body weight at 10 months, stay on Mini Puppy for a few more weeks and ask your vet to confirm timing at the next check-in.

Royal Canin Mini Adult is suitable for Maltese, Chihuahuas, Jack Russells, Pomeranians, and Shih Tzus, alongside any other small breed adult dog from 1 to 10 kg. Cavoodles often weigh 10 to 15 kg as adults, which puts them above the Mini Adult range — check your dog's actual weight against the feeding guide and use Royal Canin Medium Adult for Cavoodles over 10 kg.

Royal Canin Mini Adult daily feeding ranges from around 70 g per day for a 4 kg dog to around 120 g per day for an 8 kg dog, with the full table on the back of the pack. Start with the on-pack recommendation for your dog's current weight and activity level, then adjust in 10% steps over 2 to 4 weeks based on body condition if your dog is gaining or losing weight unexpectedly.

Royal Canin Mini Adult can be mixed with wet food for added variety and hydration, which suits many small dogs. Reduce the dry food portion proportionally so total daily calories stay within range for your dog's body weight. Royal Canin produces matching small-dog wet food in pouches that pair naturally with Mini Adult dry food.

Royal Canin Mini Adult is a general small breed formula for any dog from 1 to 10 kg, while breed-specific Royal Canin formulas (Chihuahua Adult, Maltese Adult, Jack Russell Adult, French Bulldog Adult, and others) tailor kibble shape, nutrient profile, and ingredients to that one breed's known traits — jaw shape, common skin sensitivities, coat type. Breed-specific formulas give the most tailored nutrition; Mini Adult is the strong all-rounder for breeds without a dedicated formula.
