Product Information

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed is a prescription dry dog food formulated to manage food sensitivities, intolerances, and food-related allergic responses. The protein source is hydrolysed soy protein isolate, meaning the proteins have been broken down into fragments too small for the immune system to recognise as allergens. Combined with corn starch as the sole carbohydrate source, this limits dietary triggers to a minimum, making it suitable for food elimination trials and long-term management of food-related skin and gastrointestinal conditions. Available in 2.72kg and 7.48kg. A valid veterinary prescription is required.

Health Benefits

  • Hydrolysed protein (broken-down soy): proteins are processed into fragments too small for the immune system to recognise as allergens, helping reduce the chance of an allergic reaction
  • Single carbohydrate source (corn starch): limits potential dietary triggers to one carbohydrate, supporting accurate food elimination trial results
  • Helps manage food-related skin symptoms: supports dogs with allergic dermatitis where the trigger has been identified or suspected as a dietary protein
  • Supports dogs with food-related gastrointestinal conditions: suitable for chronic vomiting, diarrhoea, and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) where food sensitivity is a contributing factor
  • Highly digestible formula: supports nutrient absorption in dogs with compromised gut function
  • Suitable for long-term feeding: formulated as a complete and balanced diet, not an intermittent or supplemental food

Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed is a prescription elimination diet for dogs that uses broken-down protein and a single carbohydrate source to help manage food allergies and sensitivities. For more options, check out our broader range of dry dog food for sensitive skin.

What It’s Used For

  • Food elimination trials: the restricted ingredient profile (single novel carbohydrate, hydrolysed protein) makes this suitable as a diagnostic elimination diet to identify food triggers
  • Food allergy dermatitis in dogs: helps manage skin inflammation, itching, and hot spots driven by dietary protein sensitivity
  • Food-related gastrointestinal disease: indicated for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), chronic diarrhoea and vomiting where food sensitivity is a contributing factor
  • Food intolerance: supports dogs with non-immunological adverse reactions to food that cause digestive or skin symptoms
  • Pancreatitis (dietary management): the reduced fat content helps manage dogs requiring a low-fat diet as part of pancreatitis care
  • Hepatic encephalopathy: the hydrolysed protein format is indicated as a dietary support option in dogs with liver-related neurological symptoms

Why Dr Jane Miller Recommends It

"When a dog comes in with recurring skin issues or chronic digestive upset and I suspect food sensitivity, Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed is an ideal diagnostic tool. The hydrolysed protein is a single soy protein source broken down into fragments too small for the immune system to recognise — which gives the diet a very clean, restricted profile that makes it ideal for elimination trials. It's also highly digestible, which matters for dogs whose gut function is already compromised. The low-residue formula supports nutrient absorption without adding unnecessary complexity. One thing I always explain to owners: this food works best when it's the only thing the dog eats for the full trial period — no treats, no table scraps, nothing else. And it's worth having an honest conversation with your vet about whether HA Hydrolyzed is the right fit; for dogs that need broader nutrient variety or higher calorie intake, there may be a better option."

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed is a prescription diet that requires a valid veterinary recommendation to purchase. Your dog should be examined by a vet before starting this diet, and a follow-up consultation is recommended every six months during ongoing use. If your dog’s condition worsens while on this diet, seek veterinary advice immediately.

A food elimination trial typically requires 8–12 weeks of feeding the hydrolysed diet exclusively with no other food, treats, or flavoured medications. During this period, HA Hydrolyzed must be the only food source for the trial to be diagnostically valid. If symptoms resolve during the trial, a food challenge (reintroducing the original diet) can confirm whether food sensitivity was the underlying cause. Your vet will guide the timing and interpretation of the trial.

Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed uses hydrolysed soy protein isolate, where the protein is broken down into fragments small enough that the immune system is unlikely to recognise them as allergens. Unlike limited ingredient diets that use novel whole proteins (such as duck or venison), the hydrolysed protein approach is designed specifically for dogs that have developed sensitivities to multiple protein sources, or where the specific trigger protein is unknown. The single carbohydrate source (corn starch) further restricts dietary variables during an elimination trial. For more on this, Dr Jack Ayerbe explains choosing the right diet for dogs with food-related skin allergies in detail.

Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed is formulated as a complete and balanced diet and can be fed long-term as an ongoing management diet, not just during elimination trials. Many dogs with confirmed food sensitivities remain on this diet indefinitely as it provides complete nutrition while minimising the risk of allergic flare-ups. Long-term use should be monitored by a veterinarian with six-monthly check-ups recommended.

During a food elimination trial, Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed must be fed exclusively with no other foods, treats, chews, or flavoured medications, as even small amounts of other proteins can invalidate the trial. Outside of a trial period, the HA Hydrolyzed wet food (337g cans) can be used alongside the dry formula for variety or added moisture. No other treats, toppers, or foods containing different protein sources should be introduced without veterinary guidance, as this may trigger a reaction in sensitive dogs.
