Product Information

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Feline is a prescription dry food for the diagnosis and nutritional management of food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances in adult cats. Each kibble combines extensively hydrolysed proteins, broken into small fragments less likely to trigger an immune response, with a single low-allergen carbohydrate source, supplied in a 3.63 kg pack and requiring veterinary authorisation.

Health Benefits

  • Hydrolysed protein source: proteins are broken down into fragments small enough that the immune system is less likely to recognise them as allergens, helping reduce the risk of allergic reactions in food-sensitive cats
  • Single low-allergen carbohydrate: rice starch is the sole carbohydrate, helping minimise the chance of an immune response to dietary carbs
  • High digestibility: formulated for easy nutrient absorption, supporting cats whose GI tract has been irritated by food triggers
  • Skin barrier support: zinc, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and vitamin A help maintain healthy skin and coat condition during dietary management
  • Urinary mineral balance (St/Ox Defense): helps promote a urinary environment unfavourable to both struvite and calcium oxalate crystal formation
  • Designed for palatability: flavoured to encourage adequate intake, which is critical for diagnostic accuracy during a strict elimination trial

Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed Feline is a cat food for allergy support and a hypoallergenic option for cats with sensitive stomachs, used for elimination trials and ongoing feeding under veterinary direction.

What It's Used For

  • Food elimination trial: identifies which ingredients trigger reactions by feeding only this hypoallergenic diet for a defined period, typically 8 weeks under veterinary direction
  • Food allergic dermatitis: helps manage immune-driven cat skin conditions such as itching, redness, and inflammation linked to dietary proteins
  • Food intolerance: supports non-allergic adverse food reactions that cause vomiting, soft stools, or other signs of sensitive stomachs in cats
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): supports cats with chronic gut inflammation by removing common dietary triggers from the diet
  • Chronic non-specific vomiting or diarrhoea: provides a hydrolysed, easy-to-digest base diet when dietary triggers may be driving cat diarrhoea or vomiting

Why Dr Jane Miller Recommends It

“When I'm investigating food sensitivities in cats, a strict elimination trial is one of the first things I reach for, and Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed is well suited to the job. The proteins are broken down into fragments so small the immune system is less likely to recognise them as allergens, and rice starch is the only carbohydrate, which keeps the ingredient panel as low-allergen as possible. I usually advise feeding this exclusively for at least 8 weeks, with no treats, no flavoured medication, and no scraps. If the signs clear up on the diet and return when the old food is reintroduced, that is your sign you've found a food trigger and need to plan long-term management with your vet.”

    Good for IBD

My cat was diagnosed with suspected IBD (based off clinical signs, not ultrasound). Since starting this food, my cat has gained weight and his diarrhoea has resolved. He is also no longer vomiting. This food is great because it also has the SO index.

Purina Pro Plan Hydrolyzed Cat Food

This food works really well for my IBS kitty. No more diarrhoea and he seems to really enjoy it. The only con is that it is very crumbly/dusty and the bottom of the bag is mostly dust - think bottom of a Wheetbix box.

    Excellent

This is brilliant for my cat with gut issues. They were on a competing brand which was full of wheat. There’s a celiac person in the household so this had problems. This one works well and also lowers the chance of cross contamination when kitty needs cuddles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed Feline is a veterinary therapeutic diet and requires a valid prescription from your registered veterinarian before purchase. Your vet will confirm the diet is appropriate for your cat's condition and provide guidance on how long to feed it. Veterinary consultation every 6 months is recommended while a cat remains on a prescription diet.

An elimination trial typically runs for 8 weeks of exclusive feeding before any conclusions can be drawn. Cats with skin signs often take longer to respond than cats presenting with GI signs, so do not stop the trial early based on incomplete improvement. For more on this, Dr Jane Miller compares hydrolysed and limited-ingredient cat diets in detail. If signs have not improved by week 8, return to your vet to discuss further investigation.

Not during an elimination trial. The diet only works as a diagnostic tool if it is the only thing your cat eats: no treats, no flavoured medications, no table scraps, no other foods. Even small amounts of another protein source can invalidate the trial. After the trial, your vet may approve treats or supplemental foods consistent with the hydrolysed protein approach.

No. Purina formulates HA Hydrolyzed Feline for adult cats with confirmed or suspected food sensitivities, and it is not labelled for kittens or for cats during gestation or lactation. Kittens with suspected food sensitivities should be assessed by a veterinarian, who can recommend a hydrolysed or limited-ingredient diet appropriate for growth. Speak with your vet before starting a young or breeding cat on any prescription diet.

A standard sensitive stomach diet uses highly digestible whole-protein ingredients to reduce GI upset, but those proteins can still trigger immune reactions in food-allergic cats. HA Hydrolyzed Feline uses extensively hydrolysed proteins, broken into fragments too small for most immune systems to recognise as allergens, plus a single low-allergen carbohydrate. This makes it suitable for diagnosis and ongoing management of confirmed food allergies, where a standard sensitive stomach diet would not be appropriate.
