Puppy Household Must-Haves
Before your puppy paws through the front door, ensure your home is a safe sanctuary.
- Crate: Crate training provides a secure "den" for your pup and is a lifesaver for toilet training. Choose a wire crate (durable), plastic crate (travel-friendly), or soft crate (portable). Pro tip: Buy a size that fits their adult dimensions and use a divider while they are small.
- Dog Bed: Look for a bed with a removable, machine-washable cover. Puppies are prone to accidents, so easy cleaning is a priority!
- Playpen or Baby Gate: Use these to "puppy-proof" your home, limiting access to carpeted areas or rooms with dangling cords until they are fully trained.
- Puppy Pads & Odour Remover: Accidents happen. Use high-absorbency pads and an enzymatic cleaner. Standard household cleaners often leave behind scents that encourage pups to "go" in the same spot again.
Puppy Toys
Start with three categories to keep them occupied:
- Teething Dog Toys: Rubber toys (like Kongs) help soothe sore gums and save your furniture.
- Comfort Toys: Soft, plush toys can help a puppy feel secure during their first nights away from their litter.
- Interactive Dog Toys: Snuffle mats and puzzle feeders provide vital mental stimulation to prevent boredom-based destruction.
Walking Your Puppy & Safety Accessories
Safety in the great outdoors (and the car) is paramount.
- Harness vs. Collar: We recommend a comfortable, adjustable collar for ID tags, but a front-clip harness for walking. Harnesses distribute pressure more evenly, protecting your puppy's fragile neck and trachea.
- ID Tags: In most regions, an ID tag with your phone number is a legal requirement. Ensure the tag is durable and legible.
- Lead: Start with a standard 1.2m to 1.8m fixed lead. We generally advise against retractable leads for puppies, as they offer less control and can cause "snap-back" injuries.
- Car Safety: It is often illegal (and always dangerous) to have an unrestrained dog in a vehicle. Use a crash-tested car seat, a heavy-duty harness, or a secured crate.
Puppy Nutrition & Feeding
What you put in the bowl today builds the foundation for their future health.
- Premium Puppy Food: Puppies require a specific balance of calcium, phosphorus, and protein to support rapid bone and muscle growth. Look for "Complete and Balanced" formulas specifically designed for puppies.
- Stainless Steel Bowls: These are non-porous, making them more hygienic and easier to disinfect than plastic or ceramic alternatives.
- Training Treats: Keep rewards small—about the size of a pea. Look for single- protein dehydrated treats (like liver or fish). Remember the 10% rule: treats should never make up more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.
- Safe Chews: Avoid rawhide, which can be a choking hazard and contains harsh chemicals. Opt for natural dental chews or vet-approved rubber chew toys.

Puppy Grooming & Healthcare
- Puppy-Safe Shampoo: Puppies have sensitive skin with a different pH level than humans. Always use a soap-free, hypoallergenic dog shampoo.
- Dental Kit: Start brushing their teeth early! Use a soft finger brush and pet- specific toothpaste (human toothpaste contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs).
- Parasite Prevention: This is vital. Ensure you have a plan for:
- Heartworm prevention
- Intestinal worms prevention
- Fleas and tick prevention (especially in paralysis tick areas)
- The "Grooming Kit": Depending on the breed, youʼll need a Slicker Brush (for undercoats), a Bristle Brush (for smooth coats), and a set of pet-safe nail clippers.
The Puppy Admin Checklist
Donʼt forget the paperwork that keeps your pet protected.
- Find Your Local Vet: Establish a relationship with a clinic early. Your first "Puppy Check" is the perfect time to ask about vaccination schedules.
- Microchipping & Registration: Ensure your contact details are up to date on the microchip registry and register your pup with the local council.
- Pet Insurance: Emergency vet visits can be costly. We highly recommend looking into pet insurance early, before any "pre-existing conditions" can develop.
- Vaccinations: Keep a folder with your pup's vaccination certificates—you'll need these for puppy school, boarding, or grooming appointments.
Ready to get started?
Setting your puppy up for success involves creating a safe and predictable environment that allows them to grow. While the list above covers the physical requirements, your most valuable tools will be consistency and routine.
