Product Information
Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo is a soap-free, pH-balanced cleansing shampoo formulated to soothe and clean itchy, dry, or sensitive skin in dogs and cats. The active oatmeal-and-aloe-vera blend calms surface irritation while gentle cleansers lift dirt and allergens from the coat without stripping the skin's natural oils. Safe for puppies and kittens.
Health Benefits
- Soothes itchy, irritated skin: colloidal oatmeal binds to the skin surface and reduces the chemical messengers that cause itching, helping reduce scratching, biting, and rubbing
- Aloe vera for surface hydration: aloe vera adds a hydrating layer that supports recovery in dry, flaky, or post-flare skin
- Soap-free and pH-balanced: no harsh soap cleansers and a pH balanced to match dog and cat skin (which is more alkaline than human skin), so it can be used frequently without stripping protective oils
- Safe for puppies and kittens: gentle formulation suitable for sensitive young animals and pets with broken or damaged skin
- Pairs with Aloveen Intensive Conditioner: the matching leave-on conditioner stays on the coat between baths, extending the soothing effect for dogs with chronic itch
- Vet dermatology heritage: developed by Dermcare Vet, an Australian vet dermatology specialist whose range is prescribed by vet dermatologists across the country
Dermcare Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo is one of the most-prescribed itch-relief products in the VLP dog bathing & grooming range, formulated for daily-to-weekly use on pets with itchy, dry, or sensitive skin.
What It's Used For
- Generalised itch and irritation: soothes the surface itch in dogs and cats showing scratching, licking, or chewing of skin and paws, including pets diagnosed with atopic dermatitis or environmental allergies
- Dry, flaky skin: rehydrates skin in pets with scaly dry skin, dandruff, or winter-coat brittleness
- Post-flare maintenance: ongoing soothing wash for pets recovering from an allergic flare or seasonal allergy episode
- Pets prone to skin sensitivity: breeds with reactive skin such as French Bulldogs, West Highland White Terriers, Labradors, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers benefit from a gentle, soap-free routine
- General coat hygiene for sensitive animals: a regular-use shampoo for any pet whose coat needs cleansing without aggravating skin (replacing human shampoos or soap-based products)

How to Use Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo
Wet your pet's coat thoroughly with lukewarm water. Apply Aloveen and work into a gentle lather, covering the whole coat including the belly and paws. Leave the lather in contact with the skin for 5 to 10 minutes for the oatmeal to bind and soothe — this contact time is the key to getting full anti-itch effect, more important than the rinse itself. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. For ongoing itch maintenance, follow with Aloveen Intensive Conditioner left in the coat between washes.
| Situation | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Active itch / flare | 2 to 3 times per week until settled, then taper |
| Maintenance for atopic / sensitive skin | 1 to 2 times per week ongoing |
| General sensitive-skin hygiene | Every 2 to 4 weeks as needed |
Why Dr Jane Miller Recommends It
“Aloveen is a soap-free, oatmeal-based wash that's gentle enough for daily use on dogs and cats with itchy or sensitive skin, and the colloidal oatmeal calms surface itch. Avoid rinsing it off too quickly by ensuring the lather needs at least five minutes of contact with the skin for the oatmeal to do its work, and that contact time is the difference between a temporary improvement and a real reduction in scratching over the following days. For pets with atopic dermatitis or seasonal allergies, Aloveen can be used as a once-or twice-weekly maintenance wash that sits well alongside whatever else your vet has prescribed. If the itch isn't responding within two to three weeks of consistent use, that's a signal there's something else driving the inflammation that needs investigating.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo can be used daily during an active itch flare, and 1 to 2 times per week for ongoing sensitive-skin maintenance. Unlike soap-based shampoos, Aloveen is pH-balanced for dog and cat skin and won't strip protective oils with frequent use. The key to getting the most from each wash is leaving the lather in contact with the skin for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing.
Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo is safe to use on cats and kittens, alongside dogs and puppies. The soap-free formulation and gentle cleansers suit sensitive young animals. If your cat resists bathing, consider Aloveen Intensive Conditioner instead — it's a leave-on product that doesn't require full immersion.
Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo is the cleansing step — it lifts dirt, allergens, and surface irritants while soothing with oatmeal and aloe. Aloveen Intensive Conditioner is a leave-in product designed to stay on the coat between baths, extending the soothing effect for several days. For dogs with chronic itch, using both together (shampoo then conditioner) produces better results than the shampoo alone.
Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo is a soothing shampoo, not an antimicrobial treatment, so it won't clear an established skin infection. For yeast or bacterial skin infections your vet will typically prescribe a medicated wash such as Malaseb (also from Dermcare) for the infection phase, with Aloveen used as ongoing maintenance once the infection is under control. If your dog has open sores, foul-smelling skin, or worsening itch, see your vet rather than relying on Aloveen alone. See our guide to vet-recommended care for dog skin conditions.
Aloveen's lather needs 5 to 10 minutes on the skin because the active ingredient — colloidal oatmeal — needs time to bind to the skin surface to produce its anti-itch effect. Rinsing off in under a minute removes most of the oatmeal before it can do its work. This contact time is what makes Aloveen perform differently from a regular shampoo, and it's the single most important variable in whether you'll see an improvement in itch.
