Labradors are affectionate, endlessly hungry and Australia's most popular breed. Getting their nutrition right matters more for this breed than almost any other.


If you have a Lab, you already know the look: the unwavering focus on the bowl, the absolute certainty that it was not quite enough, the way they treat every meal like the most important event of the day. That appetite is not greed. It is hardwired. Research has shown that many Labradors carry a gene variant that genuinely affects how their brain registers fullness.


If you're a Lab parent or you're about to bring one home, understanding why your dog seems permanently hungry and how to feed them well is one of the most practical things you can do for their long-term health.


Below, I'll walk through how to feed a Lab for a healthy weight, how to protect their joints through diet, and the best food picks for every stage from puppy to senior.

  • Many Labradors carry a POMC gene mutation that reduces satiety signals; they feel less full after eating, which is a biological fact, not greed. Portion control is your job, not theirs.

Why Labrador nutrition matters

A Labrador's constant hunger is not a training failure or a lack of willpower. It is written into the breed's biology.


That biology is a genuine genetic predisposition, not a fault in how they are raised. Research has identified a mutation in the POMC gene that affects how the hypothalamus reads hunger and fullness in a significant proportion of Labradors. 


In practical terms, the part of the brain that tells most dogs they have had enough does not work as reliably in many Labs. They feel hungry more often. They are more interested in food than most breeds, and they will eat past the point of comfort if given the chance.


This is not a behaviour problem you can train away. It means portion discipline has to be built into every meal, every day. Getting nutrition right for a Labrador is not complicated, but it does require consistency. 


Choose the right food, measure it accurately, and feed it at fixed times. That routine keeps an otherwise food-obsessed breed at a healthy weight and protects their joints, heart and metabolic health across a long life.


How to choose the best food for your Labrador

Labradors do best on a complete, balanced diet formulated for large breeds. 


That can be dry, wet, air-dried, a fresh-cooked diet formulated with a veterinary nutritionist, or a combination. What matters most is a controlled fat content and good dietary fibre to support satiety.


As a starting guide, an adult Lab needs roughly 330–470 g of dry food a day across two meals (always use the feeding guidelines on your specific food, as this can vary depending on the food you choose). Adjust from there to the food's calorie density and your dog's body condition.


Ingredients that matter


Start with the ingredient list and look for a named protein source as the first ingredient: chicken, lamb, beef, kangaroo or fish.

  • For Labs specifically, fat content matters. Large-breed and working-dog formulas often carry more fat than a Labrador with a moderate activity level needs. A dry matter fat content in the range of 10–14% is a reasonable target for most adult Labs at a healthy weight. If your Lab is already overweight, look lower.
  • Dietary fibre is worth paying attention to. Ingredients like sweet potato, pumpkin, peas or chicory root slow digestion and support gut health. Most importantly for this breed, they help a Lab feel fuller for longer after a meal. Fibre will not fully compensate for the reduced satiety signal, but it does help.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are worth looking for on the label. They support skin and coat health and, importantly for Labradors, help manage the low-grade joint inflammation that often starts in middle age.


Managing a Labrador's weight


Measure every meal. Every single time. A Lab will eat whatever is in the bowl regardless of whether it is the right amount, and feeding by eye is how portion sizes drift upward without anyone noticing.


Use the feeding guide on the packaging as your starting point, then adjust based on your dog's weight trend over four to six weeks. If the waist is disappearing, scale back by 10%. If the ribs are too prominent, add a little. Weigh them monthly rather than estimating by eye.

Never free-feed a Labrador. A bowl left out all day will be empty within minutes, and an empty bowl does not stop a hungry Lab from looking for more.


For training, use their daily kibble allocation as the reward. Labradors are famously easy to train with food, and their kibble works just as well as a separate treat, without adding extra calories on top of their daily allowance.

Labradors are genetically predisposed to elbow and hip dysplasia. Maintaining a lean body weight is the single most evidence-backed dietary intervention for joint health in dogs.


Every kilogram above the healthy range adds load to hips and elbows that are already at higher genetic risk. For a breed prone to dysplasia, weight management is joint care.


Beyond weight, marine-source omega-3 fatty acids have consistent evidence for reducing joint inflammation. That means EPA and DHA specifically, not just the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) found in plant sources. Look for foods that list fish oil or whole fish as an ingredient, or supplement with fish oil under vet guidance.

Choosing a food format for your Labrador

Each format delivers complete, balanced nutrition. For a Labrador, the single most important consideration across all formats is calorie accuracy; this is not a breed that self-regulates.

Dry dog food (kibble)


Dry dog food is the most straightforward format to weigh accurately, which is an important practical feature for a weight-prone breed. Large-breed formulas provide portion sizes well matched to a Lab's daily calorie needs, and the chewing action offers some mechanical dental benefit alongside — not instead of — regular tooth brushing, which remains the gold standard. Use a kitchen scale rather than the cup measure that often comes with the bag.


Wet dog food


Wet food has a high moisture content that supports hydration, particularly useful for senior Labs who drink less than they should. It is also more palatable for dogs who have lost interest in their regular food as they age, and the softer texture suits those with dental sensitivity. Measure portions by weight and include the calories in your Lab's daily total.


Air-dried dog food


Air-dried food is processed at low temperatures to remove moisture, resulting in a calorie-dense food with a strong, palatable flavour. 


It is more concentrated than kibble or wet by volume, so a much smaller serve is needed. This can be used as a complete base diet or as a topper to lift palatability. Either way, always feed by weight using the manufacturer's guide. 


A visual portion that looks similar to a kibble serve will almost certainly result in overfeeding for a breed already prone to weight gain.

Combining formats works for many Lab owners. Air-dried as a topper over a kibble base is a common approach that adds flavour appeal without removing the ease of portioning the base. If you mix formats, calculate the calorie contribution of each and reduce the base portion accordingly.


Whichever format wins your Lab over, the label needs to say complete and balanced to Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) or Pet Food Industry Association of Australia (PFIAA) nutrient profiles for their life stage, whether that is puppy, adult or senior.

Obesity and weight management

For an overweight Lab, a weight-management diet offers a structured path back to a healthy body condition. Reassess body condition every four to six weeks so the loss stays gradual, and speak to your vet before starting a weight management diet.

Hip and elbow dysplasia


Labradors are one of the breeds most commonly affected by hip and elbow dysplasia, which is a developmental abnormality of the joint that progresses to arthritis over time. The genetic component cannot be managed through diet, but two things can: lean body weight and omega-3 intake.


Keeping a Lab at their ideal weight reduces the daily load on joints that are already at higher risk of deterioration. Starting from puppyhood, avoiding rapid growth through controlled portion feeding and appropriate large-breed puppy food reduces the stress on developing joints. 


From middle age onward, a food that includes EPA/DHA from marine sources, or fish oil supplementation, gives you the best dietary support for managing joint inflammation.

Bloat (GDV)


Labradors are a deep-chested breed with a significant bloat risk. Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists, cutting off circulation. It is a life-threatening emergency that can develop within hours.


Two practical feeding strategies reduce the risk: splitting daily food into at least two meals rather than one, and using a slow feeder bowl to prevent fast eating. Avoid vigorous exercise in the hour before and after meals. 


If your Lab ever appears distressed, has an unusually distended abdomen, or is retching without producing vomit, go to an emergency vet immediately.

What about raw, home-cooked and fresh food for Labradors?


Raw and biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diets can suit some dogs, but they demand a level of nutritional planning most households cannot realistically sustain. A genuinely complete and balanced raw diet is hard to formulate correctly without a veterinary nutritionist. The bacterial contamination risk from raw meat is a real concern too, both for your dog and for the people handling the food.


Home-cooked diets are rarely nutritionally complete without a recipe developed specifically by a veterinary nutritionist. Cooking whole foods at home does not naturally hit the right micronutrient ratios, and deficiencies build over time without obvious symptoms until they become a clinical problem.


Fresh-cooked commercial diets are a valid option if they carry a complete-and-balanced statement on the packaging, confirming they meet the AAFCO or PFIAA nutrient profiles for the relevant life stage. If you want to feed a non-traditional diet, that statement is the minimum standard to look for. Talk to your vet before committing to any of these formats, particularly for a Labrador puppy, where getting the calcium-to-phosphorus balance right during growth is especially important.

How much should you feed a Labrador?

The amounts below are for a complete dry food (kibble or air-dried) fed as the sole diet. If combining formats, adjust total grams proportionally across both. This is just a guide. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended grams per kg of body weight.

Adjust based on your Lab's individual weight, the specific food you are feeding, and their actual activity level. A working or highly active Lab may need more, while a desexed adult with moderate exercise will sit toward the lower end.

Common Labrador feeding mistakes

1. Free-feeding. An open bowl hands portion control to the one dog least equipped to manage it, and the calories climb without anyone deciding to feed more. Set meal times, weigh each serve, and lift the bowl once the meal is done.


2. Treating too often. The same food drive that makes Labs easy to train makes it tempting to reach for treats constantly, and they add up quickly on a large dog. Counting rewards against the day's ration, rather than piling extras on top, keeps that in check.


3. Misjudging portion size. A Lab that has just eaten will still act hungry. Go by the weight on the packet and your dog's actual body condition, not by their behaviour at the bowl. If your vet says they are at a healthy weight, trust that over the dog's performance.


4. Skipping the slow feeder. Fast eating increases bloat risk and causes more gas and discomfort. A slow feeder bowl is a straightforward fix that takes thirty seconds to set up and makes a real difference for a breed that inhales their food.

Labradors are genuinely one of my favourite breeds to work with, but the weight conversation comes up in almost every consult. The POMC gene mutation is real — these dogs are not being greedy, they are wired to feel hungry. That means the feeding discipline has to come from the owner. Measure the food, limit the treats, and check the body condition score every few weeks. It makes a bigger difference than any diet food on the market.
