Product Information

Ultimum® Long Acting Horse Wormer and Boticide Gel is a broad-spectrum worming gel that pairs moxidectin, a persistent second-generation mectin, with praziquantel for tapeworm. One palatable 14.4g oral syringe treats horses up to 700kg, and when used as directed it is safe for foals over 4 weeks of age and all breeding stock. No prescription is required, and it is available as a single syringe or a stable pail of 50 tubes.

Health Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum parasite control: indicated for the control of tapeworm and all important susceptible strains of gastrointestinal roundworms, plus bots (bot fly larvae) and cutaneous onchocerciasis, a skin condition caused by Onchocerca worm larvae
  • Reaches encysted redworm larvae: controls adult and encysted stages of small strongyles (redworms), including benzimidazole-resistant strains, and aids in the control of early encysted stages and inhibited larvae buried in the gut wall
  • Long-acting protection: the Egg Reappearance Period is at least 14 weeks, which means recontamination of the pasture by strongyle eggs is significantly reduced during this period
  • Tapeworm and bots in one dose: praziquantel targets tapeworm while moxidectin controls the bot fly larvae horses swallow after summer
  • Safe for foals and breeding stock: when used as directed, Ultimum is safe in foals over 4 weeks of age and in all breeding stock, including stallions and pregnant mares
  • Easy to give: a palatable oral gel in a graduated syringe, developed and manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions

Virbac Ultimum is a long-acting horse parasite prevention treatment that targets encysted small strongyles and helps reduce pasture recontamination for at least 14 weeks after dosing.

What It's Used For

  • Encysted small strongyles (redworm larvae): for horses with a suspected large burden of larvae encysted in the gut wall, typically treated in late autumn or early spring
  • Tapeworm: the praziquantel component controls susceptible tapeworm in the same dose, with no separate tapeworm treatment needed
  • Bots: controls bot fly larvae (bots) that horses swallow after bot flies lay eggs on their coat over summer
  • High shedders: horses with repeated high faecal egg counts (worm egg counts in manure) and a suspected large small strongyle burden
  • New arrivals and quarantine: recommended for new horses arriving on a property with an unknown worming history
  • Strategic worming rotation: fills the mectin slot in a strategic worming program, rotated with wormers from other chemical families

Ingredients & Nutrients

Each mL of Ultimum oral gel contains moxidectin 20mg, a second-generation macrocyclic lactone, and praziquantel 125mg, a synthetic isoquinoline-pyrazine derivative active against tapeworm.

How to Give Ultimum to Your Horse

Estimate your horse's bodyweight, set the syringe to the correct graduation, and administer the gel over the back of the tongue. One full 14.4g syringe treats a horse up to 700kg, and smaller horses and ponies need only part of a syringe, so one tube can cover several doses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ultimum is a broad-spectrum wormer and boticide indicated for the control of tapeworm and all important susceptible strains of gastrointestinal roundworms, including large strongyles, small strongyles (adult and encysted stages, including benzimidazole-resistant strains), pinworms, ascarids, hairworms, intestinal threadworms and stomach worms, plus bots and cutaneous onchocerciasis. It also aids in the control of early encysted small strongyle stages, including inhibited larvae.

Ultimum contains moxidectin 20mg/mL, a persistent second-generation macrocyclic lactone (mectin), together with praziquantel 125mg/mL for tapeworm. The Egg Reappearance Period for Ultimum is at least 14 weeks, which means recontamination of the pasture by strongyle eggs is significantly reduced during this period.

Yes. When used as directed, Ultimum is safe in foals over 4 weeks of age and in all breeding stock, including stallions and pregnant mares. Always dose to the animal's estimated bodyweight using the syringe graduations, and speak to your vet if you are unsure.

One 14.4g syringe of Ultimum treats horses up to 700kg. Ponies and younger horses need only part of a syringe, so a single tube can provide several doses for smaller animals. Follow the dosing table on the label, which gives doses per syringe by the horse's age and bodyweight.

Ultimum is recommended for horses with a suspected large burden of encysted small strongyles, typically in late autumn or early spring, for horses with repeated high faecal egg counts, and for new horses arriving on a property with an unknown worming history. Horses under 2 years of age arriving new to a property should be given two separate worming products, such as Virbac Strategy-T Wormer alongside Ultimum, while horses over 2 years can be treated with Ultimum alone or as recommended by your veterinarian.
